State of Sequoyah Commission Conference is Sept. 2-3

A free public conference sponsored by the Cherokee Nation and the State of Sequoyah Commission is Sept. 2-3 in the Webb Center auditorium at Northeastern State University.

The SSC Conference is held in conjunction with the Sept. 3-5 Cherokee National Holiday.

Registration is 11:30 a.m. 1 p.m. Thursday, followed by a welcome address from Chad Smith, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation.

The conference is free and open to the public, but registration is required and participants are asked to pre-register. Attendees can greatly assist conference planners Dr. Richard Allen and Brianna Thirion by registering before Aug. 27. Registrations can be mailed to P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, Okla., 74465 or faxed to 918-458-5898. Contact richard-allen@cherokee.org for more information.

Due to limited spaces during NSU classes, parking is recommended at Doc Wadley Stadium. Shuttle services will be provided.

The first section, History, Education and Technology, runs 1:30-5 p.m. Thursday and continues at 8:30 a.m. Friday. The second section, the panel discussion The Future of American Indian Studies: A View from the Middle of the Seven Generations, is 8:30 a.m. noon Friday. The third section is a film review and panel discussion, We Shall Remain: The Trail of Tears, and is 1:15-5 p.m. Friday.

A reception is 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Cherokee Heritage Center on South Keeler Drive in Park Hill and a luncheon is in the University Center's Herb Rozell Ballroom at noon Friday.

Jody (Sunday) Kehle, Ph.D., University of Texas, "The Leadership of Ross O. Swimmer 1975-1985: A Modern Cherokee Principal Chief"

Nicky Michael, Ph.D., (Delaware Tribe), "Sovereignty on Trial: The Cherokee-Delaware Relationship Divided in Conflict"

Gordon Yellowman, coordinator of language programs for the Department of Education, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, "Cheyenne Rivers Project"

Elizabeth Montgomery-Anderson, Cherokee Nation GIS specialist, "Cherokee Nation Geographic Information Systems"

Kimberlie Gilliland, executive director for Cherokee Nation Education Corporation and Brad Montgomery-Anderson, assistant professor for NSU, "Cherokee Electronic Dictionary: A New Linguistic Approach"

Panelists for the second section include Jerry C. Bread Sr., Ph.D., coordinator and adjunct professor for Native American studies, outreach and recruitment, University of Oklahoma; Leslie Hannah, Ph.D., NSU, chair of languages and literature and coordinator of Cherokee language programs; Tom Holm, Ph.D., professor emeritus, University of Arizona, American Indian studies, State of Sequoyah Commission; James Riding In, Ph.D., associate professor for American Indian studies, Arizona State University.

Third-section panelists are Chris Eyre, (Cheyenne Nation), director "The Trail of Tears;" Wes Studi, Cherokee actor who portrays Major Ridge in "The Trail of Tears;" Jace Weaver, J.D., Ph.D., professor, director of Native American studies, University of Georgia, consultant for "The Trail of Tears;" Jack Baker, Cherokee Nation councilman-at-large.
