NSU offers SmarThinking service to students

In an effort to help students succeed academically, Northeastern State University is utilizing SmarThinking, an online tutoring program offering assistance to students in academic subjects.

Subjects include multiple levels and disciplines from basic writing to advanced statistics. NSU purchased a block of hours for students to try the service during the summer term.

"It is interactive technology, including a board where students can interact instantly to get help on questions," said Dr. Evelyn Woods, assistant dean of student affairs. "Students may also submit written assignments and receive feedback within 24 hours. Tutors in some subjects are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide assistance to students. Students may also make appointments to work with tutors online.

SmarThinking, based in Washington, D.C., provides people, technology and training to help institutions offer academic support to students and enhance their achievement and learning. The company works with more than 1,000 institutions and has a staff of more than 800 professionals and educators.

Woods said the service can be a valuable asset to college students.

"I know that as an instructor, there have been many times when I have received e-mails from students asking for help at hours when I am not in the office," she said. "SmarThinking should be viewed as an addition, not a replacement, to the current offerings of academic assistance on the campus. I encourage students to access the help and encourage faculty to use this as an additional tool in teaching students."
