Tahlequah, Okla. Renovations continue at Northeastern States University Center, where space once used for billiards and bowling is being converted to a multipurpose area for students.
Some billiard tables will be retained for open play and for billiard classes, but the new construction in the basement will permit food service and room for students to gather.
The work on the student area is about 70 percent done, said Randy Shelton, director of auxiliary services. We are still waiting on some material and equipment deliveries, but our target completion date is roughly the end of June. The food service areas will be completed in mid-August and open for business shortly thereafter.
New features include a coffee bar and an area serving Mexican food, a graffiti wall, additional space for student government offices, a performance stage and additional lounge space. The entire area will have wi-fi access.
The stage will permit lectures, bands, performance groups and small theatre a presentation space, Shelton said. We want the space to support additional entertainment programs and late night events.
Shelton said all major construction is completed and remaining work will address the ceiling, flooring, cabinetry, heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
Additionally, the University Center is receiving a new roof, and old carpeting will be replaced throughout the building.
The restaurant Flos, closed when Wilson Hall was taken offline in January, will be relocated on the third floor of the University Center. Shelton said the move is about 90 percent complete and will be open for business when school starts this fall.
People are going to see some great changes in the building, Shelton said. We are doing a lot of work to make the UC more user-friendly for students faculty and staff.
