Veterans Job Fair scheduled at NSUBA

Published: 2010-09-20

Northeastern State University co-hosts a Veterans Job Fair with Workforce Oklahoma on Oct. 28 at the Broken Arrow campus from 10:30 a.m. 3 p.m. Doors open to veterans at 9:30 a.m.

The Department of Labor reports more than 1.1 million unemployed veterans, a quarter million of whom are Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, with unemployment rates of 30.2 percent for age 24-under and 17.9 percent for ages 25-34.

The primary purpose of this job fair is to assist veterans in obtaining gainful employment and to inform veteran business owners of available resources and opportunities, such as federal contracts, loans and grants, said Kimbra Scott, director of university relations for branch campuses. It is to bring local, state and federal agencies together for a common objective, helping veterans locate resources that can change their lives.

Don Nichols, national employment officer with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, said veteran job fairs are important because the unemployment rate for veterans is so great, substantially exceeding the rate among many other demographics.

This really is a tragedy, said Scott. Those who have sacrificed the most continue to sacrifice while trying to reintegrate into the general population.
