RiverHawks Wellness Center Ribbon Cutting

Published: 2016-03-31

(Tahlequah, Okla.)-- Northeastern State University will celebrate its recently refurbished RiverHawks Wellness Center on the Tahlequah campus with an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, April 5 at 2 p.m.

NSU invested $5.5 million into the renovations, making the facility a state-of-the-art fitness destination for students, faculty, staff and the community.

Located south of the University Center, at the end of Lewis, the universitys newest fitness facilities include an impressive swimming pool, in-door running track and two full-sized basketball courts.

The center also boasts of spacious open areas for weight and cardio training, large multipurpose group fitness rooms and accommodating locker rooms and showers. The center also houses the Student Health Center and the College of Educations department of Health and Kinesiology.

Dr. Sonia Tinsley, health and kinesiology chair, said their students, faculty and staff were excited to be in the new facility.

It's very motivating to walk in each day and see people working out.

She added that the new Wellness Center was also a great recruiting tool for potential Health and Kinesiology majors.

Libby Rogers, director of student health, said having a stable place that was also designed for the health center, would be beneficial to students.

In the eight years I have been here, we have never had a permanent residence, but always a temporary space. With us moving in to the Wellness Center, it gives students a clinic designed for us, thats easy to get to and remember where to find us.

It just makes sense.

Full-time students, faculty and staff can utilize the facilities at no cost, with affordable rates available for everyone else, from staff family members to the wider community.

NSUs bold step toward creating an environment that encourages different forms of activity falls directly in line with its quality service standards, as highlighted in its Strategic Plan 2015-2023. With the availability of the fully equipped Wellness Center, the university demonstrates its commitment to caring, by being the gateway to a successful college experience, career and life.

As an institution of higher learning invested in its students, faculty, staff and campus communities, NSU continuously seeks to provide a holistic approach to their development and success.

Rogers agreed students health was a key factor in achieving success.

Its exciting the university has placed health, wellness and safety as a top priority in our students wellbeing.
