Northeastern State University to host American Sign Language Fair – Sept. 18

Tahlequah, Okla. – The Northeastern State University College of Education will host an American Sign Language Fair on Sept. 18 at the Tahlequah Campus Second Century Square., from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The ASL Fair celebrates American Sign Language, deaf culture and the community surrounding them.

“At Northeastern State University, we believe that language is a powerful connector—not just in communication, but in fostering understanding and connection,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “The ASL Fair reflects our commitment to celebrating the richness of Deaf culture and supporting opportunities for meaningful engagement across our campus and beyond.”

NSU actively supports the ASL community and provides opportunities for students to learn through its ‘Introduction to American Sign Language’ course. This program gives students the foundation to learn and engage with ASL. The university also offers an American Sign Language Studies minor as a complement to any major.

As the instructor leading NSU’s ASL program, Jameie Combs said the event is designed to inspire awareness. “We want students and community members to walk away with a greater awareness of the richness of American Sign Language and Deaf culture and the resources available to engage with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing,”

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees of all ages and ASL skill levels are welcome.
