NSU-Broken Arrow to host Single Reed Day

Reed-y to play with the masters? NSU-Broken Arrow to host Single Reed Day – Feb. 1

Community members, high school and college students invited to perform in masterclasses

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. — Members of the public are invited to attend Single Reed Day on Feb. 1. The event will be held on the Northeastern State University Broken Arrow campus and is open to community members, high school and college students.

Single Reed Day is an event where members of the community, who play the clarinet or saxophone, are invited to perform in masterclasses with guest artists and NSU faculty.

The event is led by NSU faculty members, Dr. Jordan VanHemert, NSU director of jazz studies, saxophonist, and Dr. Alexandra Doyle, NSU assistant professor of music, clarinetist.

“For a few years, NSU has hosted Instrumental Day, and in an effort to provide a more focused experience for specific instruments, we have Single Reed Day this semester, as well as Brass Day,” VanHemert said. “This woodwind extravaganza will include masterclasses, recitals, a vendor hall and both a clarinet choir and saxophone choir for attendees to participate in.”

Guest artists include Dr. David Cook from Millikin University, clarinetist, and Dr. Jessica Dodge Overstreet, saxophonist, from the University of Wisconsin- Steven Point.

The event will feature performances from NSU students, faculty and guest artists. Food trucks will be on campus serving lunch, weather permitting.

The performance will take place on Feb. 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the NSU-Broken Arrow campus. All single reed players are invited to register.
