James named Northeastern State University Fall 2024 Outstanding Graduate Student
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University has selected Jennifer Raye James as the fall 2024 Outstanding Graduate Student.
James, who is originally from Chicago and now resides in Tulsa, will graduate with a Master of Education in Mathematics Education on Dec. 14. She first received a degree in marketing from the University of Oklahoma in 1989. In 1992, she completed a second bachelor’s degree in elementary education at the University of Oklahoma.
“When I first found out I had won the Outstanding Graduate Student award, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and humility,” James said. “It was hard to believe and I could not help but reflect on all the support and encouragement I have received throughout my journey. I am deeply thankful for the experiences that have shaped me and this recognition is truly an honor that reflects the incredible people who have supported me along the way.”
James’ thesis is entitled, “Understanding and Addressing the Struggles of Elementary Students with Multiplication: An Instructional Design Approach,” Dr. Martha Parrott, assistant dean for the Gregg Wadley College of Science & Health Professions and chair of the M. Ed. Mathematics Education program, said.
James is a classroom teacher in Tulsa Public Schools with a passion for supporting struggling students in mathematics and is someone who strives to create a classroom culture that allows students to feel valued and empowered throughout their learning journeys.
“Her thesis is the result of having extensively researched effective pedagogies for student-centered teaching, inquiry-based learning and high-quality mathematics instruction and beautifully elevates each of the research-informed best practices for teaching the subject,” Parrott said. “Jennifer’s thesis is a model for others in the profession.”
James said she is thankful for the guidance and support of the faculty at NSU, specifically from Parrott and Dr. Dorothy Radin, NSU mathematics instructor. She said their continuous support and belief in her made all the difference and that she is eternally grateful.
“I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to so many individuals who have helped me throughout my graduate journey," James said. "First, I am deeply grateful to my parents, Don and Dianne Nisbett, whose unwavering support has been a constant in my life and to my children, Madison and Michael, whose love has seen me through every challenge.”
James said winning this award is an incredible honor, but it only reflects the support and collaboration she received from those around her. She said she considers this achievement to be a shared one and she is deeply thankful for the opportunities she has had while at NSU.
“My goal is to promote STEM education within my school and district, focusing on motivating young women to pursue careers in STEM fields,” James said. “I am excited to do my best to give back to the community, inspire others and continue to contribute to the field of education. I am also interested in exploring opportunities to teach mathematics at the college level. Above all, I am committed to continuing my teaching and learning journey, as I believe both are vital to personal growth and fostering the next generation of thinkers and innovators.”
NSU graduate faculty nominate outstanding graduate students who meet the criteria of a 3.5 cumulative GPA, excellence in scholarship in an advanced degree program, leadership, service and a positive impact on the campus community.
