Northeastern State University adds Military Science to bachelor’s degree offerings
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University has launched a new interdisciplinary bachelor of science degree in military science, expanding academic opportunities for students preparing for leadership roles in the military and related fields.
The degree program emphasizes leadership, strategy, management, operations, military theory and doctrine, communication and homeland security. Students will study the historical context of military approaches, apply principles in decision-making, and refine communication skills essential to effective operations.
Electives are available in three focus areas: communication, public relations and operations and management.
“NSU's commitment to this population is further evidenced by its dedicated support services for military-affiliated students, including academic advising tailored to their unique circumstances and resources for navigating VA benefits,” CPT. Brent Welch, assistant professor of Military Science, said. “This holistic approach ensures that students are not only academically supported but also have the necessary tools to succeed in their educational journey and beyond.”
Northeastern has a long tradition of preparing military leaders. The university’s Army ROTC program, established in 1974, has commissioned generations of officers while providing students with scholarships, stipends and the opportunity to train alongside service members and veterans.
NSU’s support extends beyond ROTC to all veterans and their families. The university participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program, awards academic credit for prior military service, and provides dedicated resources through NSU’s Veteran Services office. For the past four years, NSU has earned the Silver Military Friendly School designation from Viqtory and has been recognized as a Veteran Employer Champion.
“This new degree in military science provides our students with a unique opportunity to develop the leadership, strategic thinking and problem-solving skills essential for success in military and civilian careers alike,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “At Northeastern State University, we are committed to preparing the next generation of leaders while honoring the tradition of service that is at the heart of our ROTC and veteran programs.”
