NSU community gives back for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service - Jan 19
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) by bringing nearly 100 students, faculty and staff together for its annual MLK Day of Service on Jan. 19, 2026. This event reinforces the university’s commitment to equity, service and civic engagement within the community and beyond.
In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the event transforms a day of remembrance into a day of action, encouraging students to give back through hands-on projects across its campuses and communities.
“NSU is guided by the values of Our People, Our Place and Our Purpose, and the MLK Day of Service brings all three together,” Katie Cochran, associate director of student transition, said. “It centers our students, faculty and staff, strengthens our connection to campus and the Tahlequah community, and reinforces our purpose of giving back through meaningful service.”
“Dr. King believed in opening doors and creating pathways to opportunity,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “Through our MLK Day of Service, NSU empowers students to engage meaningfully with their communities and recognize the impact they can make through service.”
MLK Day of Service also serves as an educational experience, encouraging reflection on Dr. King’s legacy and the ongoing role of higher education in advancing social mobility and civic leadership.
“This year’s projects included on-campus efforts like cleaning and reorganizing the resource room, as well as service projects at homes and churches throughout the community,” Cochran said. “It’s a great opportunity for students to see the direct impact of their time and effort.”
