NSU invites aspiring high school musicians to explore campus, music program

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s Music Department will host an immersive full-day experience on Feb. 12, 2026, for high school juniors and seniors interested in pursuing a major or minor in music. The event offers prospective students an inside look at academic life, campus culture and the vibrant musical community at NSU.

Participants will spend the day alongside current music majors, attend live classes, meet faculty, share meals in the dining hall, tour campus facilities and end the evening with a performance by the NSU Jazz Ensemble.

“Deciding to study music is a significant and deeply personal choice,” Dr. Alison Moore, assistant professor of voice, said. “The community a student joins becomes the environment where they will learn, grow and spend countless hours rehearsing, practicing and performing. Meeting our faculty and current music majors allows prospective students to experience that community firsthand.”

Moore emphasized that many high school students are not fully aware of what majoring in music actually entails.

“Students may wonder, ‘What is aural theory?’ or ‘What does a college rehearsal feel like?’ Connecting with us directly helps demystify the college music experience,” she said. “It allows them to see our talented faculty in action, understand our expectations, and imagine themselves thriving here.”

University leaders say experiences like this reflect NSU’s broader commitment to student-centered learning and preparing graduates for meaningful, rewarding careers.

“Helping students envision what their future can be is a powerful part of higher education,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “Opportunities like this allow young musicians to experience firsthand the mentorship, creativity and community that define our music program. We are proud to welcome these aspiring artists to campus and help them envision what their future could be.”
