Northeastern State University partners with Bixby & Jenks High School choirs  for “We Are Phoenix”

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Northeastern State University and the University-Community Chorus will join forces with the Jenks and Bixby High School choirs for the Oklahoma premiere of “We Are Phoenix,” a new multi-movement choral work by acclaimed composer Timothy Takach. The concert is set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 21, 2025, at the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center, 701 S. Main Street, Broken Arrow.

The large-scale performance is part of a national commissioning project involving 48 ensembles across the United States. Takach’s composition explores themes of renewal, resilience and unity through the metaphor of the phoenix.

“This concert provides the opportunity to perform major work with a large chorus, orchestra and multi-media visuals in a stunning performing arts facility,” Dr. Jeffery Wall, NSU music professor, said. “NSU students will have the chance to mentor high school singers, collaborate across communities and bring contemporary classical music to life for Oklahoma audiences.”

The University-Community Chorus will serve as the anchor ensemble, joined by guest singers from the Jenks and Bixby High School Vocal Music programs. Together, a 240-voice chorus and orchestra will bring Takach’s music to life in a collaborative event that celebrates artistry, education and community connection.

“This performance exemplifies NSU’s mission to inspire learning, expand opportunity and strengthen our communities,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “We are proud to partner with area high school performers and showcase the talent and dedication of our students and faculty.”

Tickets are $8 for general admission and are available through the Broken Arrow Performing Arts Center Box Office.
