Northeastern State University recognized as a leader in cybersecurity education

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University has been ranked No. 2 in Oklahoma for the best online cybersecurity program for 2026 by OnlineCybersecurity.org.

Rankings were based on affordability, faculty expertise, educational quality and program flexibility. NSU’s cybersecurity program stood out for its hands-on learning, real-world projects and interdisciplinary approach.

According to Dr. Stacey White, assistant professor of criminal justice and coordinator of the cybersecurity program, NSU’s curriculum combines academic rigor with practical application, supported by experienced faculty with law enforcement and cybersecurity backgrounds.

“Our faculty bring years of professional experience that gives students a perspective many programs don’t offer,” White said. “Hands-on learning is central to what we do—students take part in simulated cyberattacks, vulnerability assessments and digital forensics exercises. We also partner with platforms like TryHackMe and other virtual labs, and we work to prepare as many students as possible for key certifications such as Security+, Network+ and Google Cybersecurity.”

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the ranking reflects the university’s commitment to preparing students for high-demand careers.

“Cybersecurity is one of the fastest-growing fields in the nation, and NSU is proud to offer a program that meets industry needs while remaining accessible to students,” Hanley said. “This recognition affirms the quality of our faculty, the innovation in our curriculum and our dedication to equipping graduates with the skills needed to protect and strengthen our communities and digital infrastructure.”

NSU’s cybersecurity program blends computer science, criminal justice and information systems, preparing graduates for versatile roles in a data-driven world. The degree is offered online, on campus or in a hybrid format. A military-friendly institution, NSU also structures the program to support students pursuing careers in network security, digital forensics and related fields.
