Northeastern State University RiverHawks set to compete in inaugural First Americans Bowl
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — After an impressive 8-3 season, the Northeastern State University Football Team is gearing up to showcase their talent and school spirit in the inaugural First Americans Bowl on Dec. 6, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah. The RiverHawks will face off against the East Central University Tigers in a matchup featuring programs with strong Native American connections and affiliations with Nike N7.
Developed by the 7 Clans Talent Agency, the First Americans Bowl celebrates athletic excellence while promoting long-term opportunities for Indigenous and minority athletes. Participating in and hosting this historic event underscores the rich cultural heritage and community values that define Northeastern State University.
"We are honored to compete in the First Americans Bowl. This game not only highlights the hard work and dedication of our student-athletes, but also celebrates the cultural heritage that makes Northeastern State so special," NSU President Rodney Hanley said.
Founded in 1846 as the Cherokee National Female Seminary, Northeastern State University is Oklahoma’s oldest institution of higher learning, with deep, enduring ties to the Cherokee Nation. “The roots of the Cherokee Nation and Northeastern are intentionally intertwined, growing together and uplifting one another,” Hanley said.
The RiverHawks are grateful to fans and supporters whose energy and encouragement fueled a historic season, culminating in the honor of hosting the First Americans Bowl. NSU Athletic Director John Sisemore said, "The First Americans Bowl is an opportunity to put our RiverHawks on a national stage while showing our appreciation to the fans and communities who support us year-round."
NSU recorded its most wins in a season since 2000, secured five road victories for the first time since 1994, and shattered program scoring records with 427 points, surpassing the 2011 mark of 405. The team averaged 38.8 points per game, eclipsing the previous record of 37 set in 1969.
"Our players have worked tirelessly and played with GRIT all season long,” Head Coach Darrin Chiaverini said “Competing in the First Americans Bowl allows us to honor our Indigenous roots and showcase our dedication on a national stage. We are deeply grateful to our fans; their support inspires us every day and fuels our journey to this historic game."
According to 7 Clans officials, proceeds from the bowl will support scholarships, youth sports initiatives and community programs benefiting Indigenous and minority athletes.
