NSU Summer Institute for Future Teachers to offer paid internship opportunities
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) has announced that participants in the 2026 Summer Institute for Future Teachers can receive a $1,500 lump-sum stipend upon completion of the program. Hosted by NSU’s RiverHawk Center for Teacher Excellence (RCTE), the Summer Institute, June 1-26 on the NSU-Broken Arrow campus, is designed for high school graduates interested in attending NSU and pursuing an education degree. Non-traditional learners and working professionals seeking flexible professional development opportunities are also supported through the program.
The program combines hands-on classroom experience with mentorship, allowing participants to explore the realities of today’s classrooms while earning compensation without enrolling in tuition-based credit hours.
"We recognize that many of our best future educators are currently working in other fields or managing complex schedules," Katie Fox, RCTE Director, said. "The institute provides a risk-free opportunity to confirm if education is the right career path. You gain clarity early enough to avoid unnecessary tuition costs for college credit hours, and you receive a $1,500 payment for your time and professional engagement."
Accessibility is a key focus of the 2026 program. Designed to support individuals balancing employment and family responsibilities, the Summer Institute offers flexible learning accommodations for qualified high school graduates, regardless of their current professional status.
"For the non-traditional learner or someone sitting on the fence, this is a truly accessible pathway to find your way," Fox said. "Even for those who ultimately choose a different direction, the experience serves as an exceptional resume builder and a high-value addition to any professional portfolio."
University leadership emphasized that the initiative aligns with NSU’s longstanding mission to prepare educators and support communities across the region.
“Northeastern State University has a long, proud history of shaping the leaders of tomorrow, and the Summer Institute is one of our most exciting innovations yet,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “We are thrilled to offer this $1,500 fellowship to help talented individuals discover their passion for teaching. By providing a flexible, supportive environment, we are opening the doors wider than ever for anyone ready to make a lasting impact in our communities.”
The application deadline for the 2026 Summer Institute is March 6. To apply, visit nsuok.edu/RCTE.
