Waltz this way: Northeastern State University to host gala honoring Johann Strauss II’s 200th birthday

Tahlequah, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s Opera Workshop invites the public to a spectacular evening of music, dance, and celebration in honor of the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss II, the world-renowned Waltz King. “Eine Nacht in Wien” will be held Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the NSU University Center Ballroom.

The evening will feature selections from Strauss’s three most celebrated operettas, performed by NSU voice students and accompanied by the NSU Communiversity Band. Dancers from the Tahlequah Dance Studio will take the stage, with the audience invited to join in for traditional waltzes.

“The NSU music department is committed to bringing classical music experiences to the Tahlequah community,” Justin Kroll, NSU assistant professor of music, said. “All Opera Workshop performances provide an evening of music that is perhaps outside of the norm for most residents, which makes it all the more valuable. This performance not only lets the community experience opera, but it gives them a chance to truly live it, the way it would have been done in the salons and ballrooms of late 19th-century Vienna.”

In true Viennese style, the gala will offer light hors d’oeuvres, coffee and sparkling beverages for a celebratory toast. Guests are encouraged to dress for the occasion, embracing the elegance and extravagance of a 19th-century ballroom.

“Events like “Eine Nacht in Wien” highlight Northeastern State University’s dedication to the arts and to engaging our community,” NSU President Dr. Rodney Hanley said. “They provide an opportunity for our students to perform at a high level while offering audiences a chance to enjoy world-class music and cultural experiences right here in Tahlequah.”

The event is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome, with all proceeds directly benefiting the NSU music program. For more information about the NSU Music program, visit nsumusic.com.
