Northeastern State University to offer Doctor of Education degree
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Northeastern State University (NSU) has received formal approval from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education to offer a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), marking a major step forward in the university’s efforts to expand advanced graduate education and strengthen leadership capacity across Oklahoma.
NSU’s new Ed.D. will center on community-based leadership, preparing professionals to lead in schools, higher education institutions, tribal nations, nonprofits, municipalities and other organizations that anchor the civic and economic well-being of the region. The program emphasizes applied research, collaborative problem-solving and leadership grounded in authentic community engagement.
NSU President Rodney Hanley said the Regents’ decision reinforces the university’s historic mission. “NSU has always stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the communities it serves,” he said. “This doctoral program extends that promise by preparing leaders who will strengthen organizations, elevate partnerships and advance the future of our region.”
Dr. Carla Swearingen, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, added that the degree builds on NSU’s longstanding excellence in educator development. “Community-based leadership isn’t just a component of this program, it is the heart of it,” she said.
NSU is currently seeking Higher Learning Commission (HLC) approval for the new degree. An application for HLC approval is pending. Once approved, more information regarding the application process will be available.
