NEORAAIN Scholarship deadline approaching for NSU, NEO nursing students
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Native American students pursuing nursing degrees at Northeastern State University or Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College are encouraged to apply for the Northeast Recruitment and Advancement of American Indians into Nursing scholarship before the March 1 deadline.
The NEORAAIN program was established to remove financial barriers that often prevent students from advancing their nursing education. By offering scholarships, the program helps students afford tuition, gain essential clinical experience, and transition seamlessly from NEO to NSU for advanced degrees. In addition to financial assistance, NEORAAIN provides ongoing support, tracking student progress, setting success benchmarks and ensuring they receive guidance throughout their academic journey.
“One thing that we are seeing is that this generation of students is very money-conscious,” Dr. Sydney Dorrough, associate dean for the Gregg Wadley College of Science & Health Professions, said. “The trend that we are seeing is that they are not willing to take out large loan amounts. What we are finding is that being able to offer a scholarship is allowing them to further their education and remove that financial barrier.”
NEORAAIN Program Coordinator Leeah Hart emphasized the program’s dedication to student success, saying she and the staff work closely with students to help them navigate the application process and stay on track.
“We are here to support our students, whether that means helping them apply for the scholarship, tracking their academic progress or conducting check-ins to ensure they are succeeding,” Hart said. “Our goal is to invest in their future and help them achieve their career aspirations.”
To qualify for the NEORAAIN scholarship, applicants must be enrolled full-time in an ADN, RN-to-BSN, or RN-to-MSN program at NSU or NEO, be a member of a federally recognized tribe and commit to serving at an Indian Health Services clinic for two years after graduation, among other criteria.
Funded through a grant from Indian Health Services in partnership with NSU, NEO and Inter-Tribal Council, Inc., the NEORAAIN program is part of a larger effort to strengthen Native American representation in the healthcare workforce.
Students and school counselors are encouraged to apply by March 1.
