Northeastern State University drives nearly $500 Million in economic impact for Oklahoma
University delivers $14.27 in economic output for every $1 in state support
TAHLEQUAH, OK — A newly released study confirms that Northeastern State University is not only a vital part of Oklahoma’s higher education system but also a powerful economic driver for the state. In fiscal year 2024, NSU generated $491.7 million in total economic output and supported 4,973 jobs across Oklahoma.
The independent analysis, conducted by the UC Economics Center, highlights NSU’s far-reaching impact through university operations, student spending and the long-term productivity of its alumni. Combined, these activities contributed $248 million in wages and $16.57 million in state and local tax revenue — including $9.2 million in income taxes and $7.37 million in sales taxes.
One of the most striking findings: for every $1 in state appropriations NSU received, the university generated $14.27 in economic output — a strong return on public investment in higher education.
“NSU’s impact is seen not just in the students we educate, but in the jobs we support, the income we help generate, and the communities we strengthen,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “This study reinforces what we’ve long believed—NSU is an essential partner in building Oklahoma’s future.”
The data also highlights the university’s enduring commitment.
“For more than a century, Northeastern State University has been dedicated to uplifting students and communities through education. This report makes it clear—NSU is a sound investment that delivers measurable and lasting returns,” Hanley said.
As one of Oklahoma’s leading regional universities, NSU continues to play a central role in workforce development, community enrichment and the economic resilience of the state.
