NSU to empower and celebrate first-generation college students in November

NSU to empower and celebrate first-generation college students in November

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University has been awarded a grant for the 2024 First-Generation College Celebration initiative. The First-Generation College Celebration is recognized each year on Nov. 8, marking the anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act, which has helped millions of first-generation students persist to degree completion

The grant was provided by the Council for Opportunity in Education and FirstGen Forward with support from TIAA and the Strada Education Foundation. The grant will enable NSU to further its commitment to supporting first-generation college students in our community.

“I greatly appreciate the hard work that went into securing this grant,” Sheila Self, assistant vice president for NSU Student Affairs, said. “First-generation students currently comprise 32% of the student body at Northeastern. I am excited to utilize the funding to further develop NSU’s commitment and dedication to supporting these first-generation scholars.”

The First-Generation College Celebration, observed annually on Nov. 8, highlights the experiences and achievements of first-generation students while addressing the systemic barriers they face in higher education.

"First-generation college students bring unique perspectives and resilience to our campuses,” COE President Kimberly Jones, said. “This grant empowers institutions like NSU to continue providing the necessary resources and support for these students to thrive."

By receiving this grant, NSU reaffirms its dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

"We are thrilled to partner with NSU and other institutions across the country to advance the success of first-generation college students.” Maurice Jones, CEO of FirstGen Forward, formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success, said. “We’re especially grateful to TIAA and the Strada Education Foundation for their generous sponsorship of this grant, which represents an opportunity to catalyze innovative solutions and create lasting impact within our communities."

Launched by COE and FirstGen Forward in 2017, the First-Generation College Celebration has united hundreds of college campuses across the country for an often-overlooked population through numerous events, including student rallies, faculty-led panel discussions, artistic performances, and more in recognition of first-generation students, administrators, faculty, and alumni.

“As a first-generation college graduate, I am keenly aware how active support can significantly impact the quantifiable success a student is able to achieve,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “This funding provides NSU with the opportunity to renew our commitment to our first-generation students and ensure that they become successful, empowered graduates.”

As part of the grant, NSU will be hosting a luncheon and panel discussion for students on Nov. 7. Two $250 tuition waivers will be distributed as part of a giveaway at the luncheon.
