NSU’s Opera Workshop will bring “Orpheus in the Underworld” to the stage
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s Opera Workshop will stage a production of “Orpheus in the Underworld” on April 11-12 at 7 p.m. at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts.
Undergraduate vocal students will guide audience members through the underworld as they perform a comical retelling of the opera based on the legendary journey of Orpheus.
Each spring semester, the NSU Opera Workshop stages a full operatic production, allowing undergraduate vocal students to put theory into practice. The musical works that students perform are almost exclusively in English and chosen a year in advance.
Justin Kroll, director of opera at NSU, said that audience members can expect a production with full costumes and props, evocative sets and lighting, recognizable tunes and even a performance of the Can-Can, that will aid in the comical retelling of the popular story from Greek mythology.
“I hope that audiences leave with a greater appreciation for opera than they had before,” Kroll said. What opera does quite well is present stories that are relatable, and incredibly human, inviting audiences to see themselves and their lived experiences on stage, all while being surrounded by beautiful music!”
The performances will be held in the NSU Center for the Performing Arts.
Tickets for admission are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and students. Tickets may be purchased online or in-person at the door on performance day.
