Northeastern State University recognized in 2025 Carnegie Classifications
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University has been nationally recognized in the 2025 Carnegie Classifications, earning two distinctions that highlight its commitment to student success, workforce preparation and academic excellence.
NSU was one of 479 institutions nationwide to receive the Opportunity College and University designation – about 16 percent of all classified institutions. The designation recognizes schools that demonstrate both higher access — by enrolling a significant percentage of Pell Grant recipients and underrepresented students — and higher earnings, with graduates achieving competitive wages eight years after enrollment.
Additionally, NSU has been designated a Professions-focused Undergraduate/Graduate-Doctorate Medium Institution in the 2025 Institutional Classification, placing it among only 3 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. This designation highlights institutions that award degrees in professional fields at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
“This recognition reaffirms Northeastern’s deep-rooted mission to create meaningful access to higher education while also preparing our graduates for workforce success,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “As an institution that has long served first-generation and historically underserved populations, we are proud to be acknowledged for these recognitions.”
The 2025 Carnegie Classifications are based on data from the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, the College Scorecard and the U.S. Census Bureau.
