Northeastern State University Vice President of University Relations receives Natalea Watkins Communicator of the Year Award
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University Vice President of University Relations, Dr. Dan Mabery, was presented with the Natalea Watkins Communicator of the Year Award at the 2024 Oklahoma College of Public Relations Association Awards annual conference.
The Natalea Watkins Communicator of the Year Award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exemplary leadership skills and possess a commitment to service.
“I am truly humbled by receiving this award and am proud to continue the legacy of Natalea Watkins,” Mabery said. “This award represents the hard work and dedication of so many great communicators and marketing professionals at Northeastern. I am proud to lead this very talented team of professionals.”
Mabery has spent nearly 30 years working in higher education, bringing his marketing expertise, crisis management and leadership skills to the NSU Communications & Marketing team in 2019. Under his leadership, he has guided the office through the delivery of accurate, timely communications to students, staff, faculty and members of the general public during the COVID-19 pandemic and the NSU cyber security incident.
A first-generation college graduate, Mabery earned his bachelor’s degree in science education/physics from Central Methodist College. He also holds an MBA and a master’s of management; marketing from the University of Mary. He recently earned his doctorate in leadership from Creighton University.
“On behalf of the institution, I would like to extend a congratulations to Dr. Dan Mabery for receiving this well-deserved recognition,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “His exemplary leadership and dedication to Northeastern’s continued advancement in Oklahoma and beyond has left a lasting mark on our institution. He is the embodiment of a servant leader and a testament to the transformative power of education.”
The announcement was made during OCPRA’s annual conference Fall Workshop on Nov. 20, 2024 in November.
NSU has been an active OCPRA participant for over three decades. OCPRA was founded in the late-1960s with the goal of promoting the transformative power of higher education emphasizing the important role institutions, both public and private, play in bolstering Oklahoma’s economy and quality of life for all citizens.
