NSU-Broken Arrow to hold Get Green for Blue summer youth academy – June 2-6
BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Northeastern State University Broken Arrow will host the “Get Green for Blue: Outdoor STEM Investigations Connecting Water to You” summer youth academy June 2-6. The academy will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is free for students from eighth through 10th grades, and there are opportunities for flexible drop-off and pickup times.
During the academy, students will work in teams to learn about water quality by collecting data, analyzing the health of water bodies and finding solutions for water quality problems. Camp is ideal for teenagers interested in biology, agriculture or environmentalism.
“Through hands-on experiences, opportunities are created that support critical-thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, observation skills, hypothesis testing and communication skills,” Dr. Pamela Christol, NSU professor of science education, said.
Participants will receive lunches and snacks, a backpack, two T-shirts, a stereoscope and a leather-bound journal for free. Field trips to the Oxley Nature Center will also be included.
Christol said the academy not only provides students with scientific learning opportunities but also helps them make connections in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. She added that students will also learn about financial aid resources and be encouraged to include their youth academy experience on their college applications.
Participants must provide their own transportation to and from the academy, but transportation to field trips will be provided.
To apply, students must be entering the eighth, ninth or 10th grade, be a resident of Oklahoma and submit an application and the required documents. This academy is free to attend.
