Northeastern State University announces new pickleball courts coming in 2025

Tahlequah, Okla. – Northeastern State University will expand its recreational offerings on its Tahlequah campus with the addition of two outdoor pickleball courts, scheduled to open in late fall 2025.

The courts will be located at the southeast corner of Crafton Street and Grand Avenue, a site chosen for its visibility and accessibility. The project was prioritized by the university’s cabinet following a request from the Northeastern Student Government Association, ensuring it will serve both students and the broader NSU community.

“This project will not only enhance campus life but also promote health, recreation and community engagement,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “We look forward to seeing students, faculty, staff and members of the community enjoying this new space once it is completed.”

Harold McMillen, assistant vice president of Facilities and Grounds, said the project reflects the university’s value of purpose and growing recreational trends.

“This project not only supports our core values but also meets a rising demand for pickleball, one of the fastest-growing recreational activities in the country,” said McMillen.

The $250,000 project will be funded through state capital allocations. Features will include lighting for evening play, chain-link fencing for safety, a concrete apron to accommodate seating, and ADA-accessible parking along Crafton Street on the north side of the site.

Construction is not expected to result in extended street closures, though temporary traffic interruptions may occur during pavement and concrete work. Facilities staff will work with the Campus Police Department if traffic control measures are needed.
