Raven the Science Maven to keynote Oklahoma Research Day at NSU – Feb. 27

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Oklahoma Research Day, one of the state’s premier celebrations of student and faculty scholarship, will return Feb. 27, 2026, hosted by Northeastern State University on its Tahlequah campus.

The free, statewide conference marks 27 years of bringing together students, faculty and researchers from across Oklahoma to showcase scholarly, creative and research-driven achievements.

Internationally acclaimed molecular biologist and science educator Dr. Raven Baxter — widely known as “Raven the Science Maven” — will deliver the keynote address from 9-11 a.m. in the University Center Ballroom.

Baxter, a distinguished molecular biologist and doctor of science education, has gained national recognition for redefining science learning by incorporating pop culture and innovative communication strategies. In addition to her viral online presence, she serves as executive director of The Science Haven, a nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to science education.

Her previous leadership roles include director of diversity initiatives at the University of California, Irvine School of Biological Sciences and director of science communication at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Her work centers on building supportive learning environments and making scientific expertise accessible and culturally responsive. Baxter has been recognized with numerous honors, including Forbes 30 Under 30, Fortune 40 Under 40 and EBONY Power 100.

“We are incredibly honored to host Dr. Raven Baxter for Oklahoma Research Day,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “Dr. Baxter embodies the innovative spirit we strive to instill in our students, showing that science is not only a career, but a vibrant and essential part of our global community.”

Held annually, Oklahoma Research Day provides an interactive space for participants from all disciplines to present poster sessions highlighting research, creative works and applied scholarship. Colleges and universities across the state are represented, fostering collaboration, networking and the exchange of ideas.

“As a member of the Oklahoma Research Day Council, NSU is honored to be selected as a host institution,” Dr. Jessica R. Secratt, NSU Director of Research and Sponsored programs, said. “This is our second-year hosting, which allows the event to move across the state and remain accessible to students and faculty from a wide range of institutions.”

ORD 2026 will also feature a Career and Graduate School Fair, open to all attendees, offering opportunities to connect with employers, graduate programs and organizations from across the region. Lunch will be provided for participants who register by Feb. 20.
