NSU to host The United States Air Force Band of the West

Music in the air! Northeastern State University to host The United States Air Force Band of the West for performance - Aug. 27

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University will host The United States Air Force Band of the West for a concert Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Center for the Performing Arts.

Formed in 1941 and granted official status in 1997, the USAF Band of the West’s mission is to lift the morale of airmen and inspire patriotism. Each year, the band travels more than 125,000 miles to perform, earning honors such as the Colonel George S. Howard Citation of Musical Excellence for Military Concert Bands and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.

From pop to country, the diverse ensembles perform a variety of musical genres, many with a patriotic theme. This special performance will also feature a vocalist, adding an extra dimension to the evening’s program.

“We are honored to welcome The United States Air Force Band of the West to Northeastern State University,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “Their performance is not only a celebration of musical excellence, but also a powerful reminder of the values of service, unity and patriotism that resonate deeply within our campus and community.”

Dr. Joseph Bello, Director of Bands and Low Brass, will be guest conducting one of the pieces in the program. Bello served in the U.S. Air Force and with the USAF Band of the West for almost 16 years before retiring in 2014.

“The mission of the United States Air Force Band is to honor, inspire and connect,” Bello said. “They are fulfilling that mission in Tahlequah by bringing the community together in unprecedented times.”

This 90-minute concert offers NSU students, faculty and staff–as well as the Tahlequah community—a chance to enjoy a world-class performance while supporting the U.S. Airforce.
