NSU announces honorary Doctor of Humane Letters for Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief David W. Hill

TULSA, Okla.--Northeastern State University (NSU) will award an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.), honoris causa, to Muscogee (Creek) Nation Principal Chief David W. Hill during its Spring 2026 Commencement ceremonies.

Hill serves as the seventh Principal Chief of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation. Prior to his election, he spent more than 30 years in the aerospace industry and later served three terms on the Muscogee (Creek) Nation National Council. During his administration, Hill has led efforts to strengthen tribal governance, respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and uphold tribal sovereignty following the landmark Supreme Court decision affirming the Muscogee (Creek) Nation Reservation. In recognition of his leadership, he was named to TIME’s list of the 100 most influential people.

NSU serves Native American students from tribal nations across Oklahoma, including the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, and remains committed to supporting educational access, workforce development and community advancement throughout the region.

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the honorary degree recognizes Hill’s leadership and his service to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, as well as the university’s ongoing commitment to supporting tribal communities across Oklahoma.

“Principal Chief David W. Hill’s journey from a career in aerospace to leadership in tribal government speaks to his work with the Muscogee (Creek) Nation,” Hanley said. “His efforts to strengthen governance and uphold tribal sovereignty continue to make a difference for his community, one NSU is proud to serve, and reflect what we want our students to carry forward.”

Hill will also deliver remarks during the May 11 commencement ceremony in Tulsa.

Additional details about NSU’s Spring 2026 commencement ceremonies, scheduled May 8, 9 and 11, including ceremony times and livestream information, can be found at nsuok.edu/commencement.
