NSU leads in providing affordable educational pathways for Northeastern Oklahoma and beyond

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) has been ranked No. 7 in the nation on Washington Monthly’s newly released “Best Colleges for Rural America” list. The ranking recognizes higher education institutions that deliver outsized value to their rural communities through accessible admissions, affordable tuition, strong graduate outcomes and regional community impact.

The ranking highlights institutions that deliver strong returns for their students and communities. Rather than measuring schools by selective admissions or endowment size, the national index focuses on real-world impact: graduating students with minimal debt, creating clear pathways to opportunity for first-generation and low-income students, and producing skilled professionals who stay local to strengthen regional economies.

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the ranking reflects what the university has long stood for: its mission to educate, provide affordable opportunities and strengthen communities across Northeastern Oklahoma and beyond.

"Higher education is the single most powerful tool for positive socioeconomic change in our nation," Hanley said. "Being recognized among the top 10 institutions in the country speaks directly to our core mission, creating real opportunity where it matters most. Every degree earned at Northeastern State University represents a life transformed, a family empowered and a community strengthened. We're proud to deliver an exceptional education that lifts entire generations of Oklahomans without burdening them with debt."

NSU’s ranking reflects continued investments in affordability and access, including need-based scholarships and professional opportunities for current students, improving the communities within Northeastern Oklahoma.
