NSU announces 2026 Model the Way Award recipients
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) has named the four individuals selected for the 2026 President’s “Model the Way” Award.
The annual honor recognizes two faculty and two staff members who exemplify leadership, service and commitment to the NSU mission. Recipients were selected from peer nominations and recognized during the university’s spring Employee Recognition Ceremony.
“The Model the Way Award reflects the people who help shape the culture of this institution,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “These four individuals lead with purpose through their dedication to students, their colleagues and the university community. Their work helps ensure NSU remains a place where students are supported and encouraged to succeed.”
The 2026 Faculty Honorees are as follows:
Dr. Heather Fenton, Nursing Program Director and Clinical Assistant Professor
Dr. Fenton is recognized for her role as a mentor and leader within the Department of Nursing. In addition to expanding academic programs and meeting rigorous regulatory standards, she is known for creating a supportive environment where students feel encouraged and valued. Her commitment to service extends from bedside care for patients across the lifespan to outreach efforts abroad, including providing supplies and education to communities in Cuba.
Kacie McConnell, Occupational Therapy Clinical Assistant Professor/Field Coordinator
McConnell is honored for the support and grace she offers her students. By fostering a classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning from mistakes, she prioritizes both academic success and student well-being. Nominators highlighted her patience and accessibility as qualities that made a meaningful impact on students throughout the academic year.
The 2026 Staff Honorees are as follows:
Cari Helm, University Relations Sr. Administrative Assistant
A cornerstone of the University Relations team, Helm is recognized for her “service above self” philosophy. From staying late to help meet project deadlines to mentoring student workers, Helm consistently supports the work of the university. Her leadership within Staff Council and the relationships she has built across campus have made her a valued member of the NSU community.
Lt. Kevin Hamby, NSU Public Safety
With four years of service, Lt. Hamby is recognized for consistently exceeding expectations in his role. Known for volunteering his personal time to help ensure coverage for major events and proactively identifying safety concerns, Hamby’s dedication contributes to the safety and well-being of the campus community. Colleagues say he consistently models the values NSU strives to uphold.
Each honoree received a $1,000 stipend courtesy of the NSU Foundation. Their names and biographies also will be added to the Model the Way commemorative plaque in the Administration Building on the Tahlequah campus.
