Northeastern State University earns flawless CAEP review; expands national accreditation to ACE Institute
Zero Areas for Improvement underscores excellence in educator preparation programs; ACE becomes Oklahoma’s only nationally accredited alternative certification preparation program
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) has announced the continuation of its national accreditation through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), highlighted by a flawless institutional review with no Areas for Improvement or Stipulations across its educator preparation programs.
For the first time, NSU’s Alternative Certification for Educators (ACE) Institute was also included in the national CAEP review, marking a new milestone for the university and extending national accreditation standards across all educator preparation pathways at NSU.
As one of Oklahoma’s long-standing leaders in teacher preparation, NSU has maintained national accreditation for its educator preparation programs since 1954. The latest CAEP review affirms continued excellence across both initial and advanced programs, reflecting the university’s longstanding commitment to excellence in teacher preparation.
CAEP is the nation’s recognized accrediting body for educator preparation, evaluating programs against rigorous, evidence-based standards. The review examines candidate performance, clinical experience, public school partnerships, faculty qualifications and data-driven improvement.
With the inclusion of ACE in this review cycle, NSU now ensures that candidates preparing for alternative certification pathways are evaluated under the same nationally recognized standards as traditional educator preparation programs.
Dr. Vanessa Anton, dean of the College of Education, attributes the accreditation outcome to NSU’s culture.
“Achieving CAEP accreditation with zero Areas for Improvement is a massive victory that belongs entirely to our community," Anton said. "Together, this team reviewed extensive data, drafted exhaustive self-studies and shone during formal interviews with national site reviewers. This outcome is a direct reflection of the deep, institution-wide culture of excellence and commitment to educator quality that defines Northeastern State University."
For graduates, this national recognition provides assurance that their preparation meets nationally recognized standards for educator quality. School districts and employers can be confident that NSU alumni have completed programs evaluated through a rigorous accreditation process focused on student outcomes, clinical experiences and continuous improvement.
Anton further defined the significance of the review outcome and what it means for future educators prepared at NSU.
“This achievement reflects the strength of NSU’s educator preparation programs and the dedication of our faculty, staff, students and school partners,” Anton said. “By combining innovative academic programs with deeply rooted community and state agency partnerships, we ensure our graduates enter the workforce prepared to make a meaningful impact in classrooms and communities from day one.”
Dr. Bisogno, associate dean of the College of Education, emphasized the significance of including ACE in the national review.
"In a major stride toward combating Oklahoma’s teacher shortage, NSU included its Alternative Certification for Educators (ACE) Institute in the national CAEP review for the first time," Bisogno said. “By voluntarily putting these accelerated pathways through the same strict review, we ensure individuals preparing for alternative certification meet the same high standards as our traditional programs. This allows mid-career switchers and degree-holders to quickly enter Oklahoma classrooms fully prepared and trained for long-term success."
NSU President Rodney Hanley notes that the university's education programs continue to demonstrate that high-quality teacher preparation can be both accessible and affordable.
"Providing high-quality, accessible education is at the core of our mission at NSU," Hanley said. "Securing this accreditation outcome demonstrates that we are breaking down barriers for our students while maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence. By keeping nationally recognized teacher preparation accessible and affordable, we are directly investing in the future of families and classrooms across Oklahoma and beyond."
For generations, NSU has prepared educators who serve schools and communities throughout Oklahoma and the region, continuing a tradition of leadership in teacher education.
