Northeastern State University online Master’s in Math Education ranks No. 34 nationally

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s (NSU) online Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Mathematics Education has been ranked No. 34 nationally by OnlineMasters.com in its 2026 Best Online Master’s in Math Education Programs rankings. NSU was the only Oklahoma institution included on the list and tied with another institution for the most affordable program.

OnlineMasters.com evaluated more than 2,000 institutions for its 2026 rankings. The rankings consider academic quality, graduation outcomes, cost and return on investment and student support resources.

NSU’s M.Ed. in Mathematics Education is designed for educators looking to deepen their knowledge of mathematics and strengthen their instructional practice. Offered in online, on-campus and hybrid formats with select synchronous courses, this 35-credit program serves educators working across early childhood, elementary, middle, high school and special education.

Dr. Martha Parrott, professor of mathematics and program chair, said the program builds on the experience educators already bring to the classroom while helping them develop deeper expertise in mathematics and teaching.

“The NSU M.Ed. in Mathematics Education is tailored to strengthen teachers' expertise in both mathematics content and instructional practice,” said Parrott. “Our graduates exit the program prepared to act as instructional leaders who positively impact the teaching profession across Oklahoma and beyond. Aligned with national standards, our goal is to equip and empower educators to inspire high-quality mathematics learning for every student.”

The program combines advanced mathematics coursework with instructional strategies educators can take directly into their classrooms, giving teachers the opportunity to strengthen their mathematical understanding while developing new approaches to teaching.

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the program’s value extends beyond earning another credential.

“Teachers have a tremendous influence on how students experience mathematics,” said Hanley. “Giving educators the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and strengthen their practice ultimately gives their students more opportunities to see what they can do with mathematics.”
