NSU Pre-Licensure Nursing program earns provisional approval; BSN applications due April 15

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Northeastern State University’s new Pre-Licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program has been granted provisional approval by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing, marking a significant step forward in expanding access to nursing education and addressing workforce needs across the state.

The program, set to launch in fall 2026, will prepare students for initial licensure as registered nurses through a rigorous curriculum that integrates evidence-based practice, clinical reasoning and hands-on clinical experiences. Graduates will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

“Receiving provisional approval is an important milestone for NSU and a testament to the dedication of our faculty and leadership,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “This program reflects our commitment to meeting Oklahoma’s healthcare needs while creating new opportunities for students to pursue meaningful careers in nursing.”

As the program moves forward, applications for the inaugural cohort are open through April 15, and university officials encourage prospective students to complete the process before the deadline.

To support applicants, NSU’s Department of Nursing has added a virtual open house on April 7 at 7 p.m., providing an additional opportunity for students who may be unable to attend in person. Attendance at one open house—either in person or virtual—is required as part of the application process.

“These open house sessions are an important step for prospective students,” Dr. Heather Fenton, director of nursing programs, said. “They provide insight into the program’s expectations, structure and support systems, while helping students feel confident as they take the next step toward a career in nursing.”

The upcoming virtual open house offers applicants the opportunity to meet faculty, discuss facilities and learn more about admissions requirements, curriculum and clinical experiences.

Oklahoma continues to face a significant shortage of registered nurses, particularly in rural and underserved areas. NSU’s Pre-Licensure BSN program is designed to help meet that demand by preparing graduates to serve in hospitals, clinics, tribal health systems and community healthcare settings across the region.

For more than 40 years, NSU has been a leader in nursing education, offering programs that emphasize high-quality, patient-centered care. The new BSN program builds on that legacy with expanded pathways for students entering the profession.

Applications for the Fall 2026 cohort will be accepted through April 15. To learn more, register for an open house or apply, visit nsuok.edu/nursing.
