NSU ranks in nation’s top 50 for online reading education programs

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s (NSU) Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Reading was recently recognized as one of the nation’s top 50 online degree programs by OnlineMasters.com. The program is ranked No. 2 among Oklahoma colleges offering online reading education degrees.

The ranking recognizes the program's academic quality and student success while reinforcing NSU's commitment to preparing literacy professionals.

Dr. Sarah Ramsey, program chair of Reading, said the faculty and curriculum are designed to keep pace with evolving literacy research and trends.

Faculty members bring distinct research interests that are woven into a comprehensive curriculum. Students apply evidence-based practices from Lexia® LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), Orton-Gillingham instruction and Harvard’s Making Thinking Visible approach.

“Our program is built to move with the field rather than behind it,” Ramsey said. “The dual vantage point of having research on one side and classroom and community on the other, lets the program respond at the school and district levels with the strongest evidence-based instruction available.”

To stay ahead of evolving literacy standards, the program developed Science of Reading coursework, micro-credentials and dedicated dyslexia coursework before Oklahoma’s literacy requirements took effect.

NSU’s M.Ed. in Reading prepares graduates to improve literacy outcomes through evidence-based practices grounded in early childhood, special education and effective classroom instruction.

“Strong literacy instruction creates a foundation for lifelong learning,” NSU President Rodney Hanley said. “This recognition reflects NSU’s commitment to preparing educators who strengthen reading achievement in classrooms across Oklahoma while helping meet the growing need for highly qualified literacy professionals.”

The program can be completed online, providing flexibility for working educators seeking career advancement. 

NSU is also home to the Cappi Wadley Center for Reading & Technology, a literary resource that provides reading assessments, individualized tutoring, technology-based learning and educational support for local teachers, families and students in grades 1-12.
