Washington Monthly rankings recognize NSU for affordability, social mobility and student outcomes

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Washington Monthly ranked Northeastern State University (NSU) No. 7 in the South in its 2026 Best Colleges for Your Tuition (and Tax) Dollars: South guide. The national rankings evaluate higher education institutions on their contributions to the public good, emphasizing access, affordability, early-career earnings and student outcomes.

The annual guide places particular emphasis on social mobility, measuring how effectively colleges help students from all socioeconomic backgrounds earn degrees that support their career goals.

NSU ranked No. 7 among colleges in the South and No. 123 nationally. It was the only Oklahoma institution to rank in the South’s top 10. Nationally, the next-highest-ranked Oklahoma institution placed at No. 262, a difference of 139 ranking positions.

Nearly 96% of NSU graduates remain in Oklahoma after graduation, recognizing the university’s role in developing the state’s workforce and supporting local communities. The ranking reflects NSU’s focus on affordable, accessible education and student outcomes.

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the recognition reflects the university’s commitment to providing students with an affordable, high-quality education that benefits graduates and their communities.

“We believe a quality education should be within reach for those who seek it,” Hanley said. “We appreciate this recognition of our commitment to helping students earn their degrees, build their skills and contribute to communities across the region.”
