NSU RiverHawks Scholar Program seeks community internship partners
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The RiverHawks Scholar Program at Northeastern State University is seeking additional community business partners to provide internship opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities during the 2026-27 academic year.
Local employers can host a student intern at no cost for up to 15 hours per week throughout the academic year. These internships provide students with valuable hands-on work experience while helping employers build a more inclusive workforce and invest in the future of their community.
"Our post-graduation employment rate is 75% compared to the national average of 24%," RiverHawks Scholar Program Director Justin Chase said. "This demonstrates that inclusive postsecondary education works and creates opportunities for greater independence. Through four years of work-based internship experiences, our students develop the confidence, skills and experience needed to pursue meaningful employment after graduation."
Established in 2018, the RiverHawks Scholar Program was the first inclusive postsecondary education program of its kind in Oklahoma. The four-year certificate program provides students with an authentic college experience while preparing them for independent living and meaningful employment.
Built around four pillars, academics, independent living, social engagement and career development, the program combines traditional university coursework with individualized support, life-skills instruction and career preparation. Students live on campus, participate in student organizations and complete internships that allow them to apply classroom learning in real-world settings.
In 2025, NSU received nearly $2 million through the U.S. Department of Education's Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID) grant. The funding is expanding student services, strengthening career-readiness initiatives and increasing outreach to prospective students and families.
"Employers play a vital role in preparing our students for successful, independent futures," NSU President Rodney Hanley said. "By partnering with the RiverHawks Scholar Program, local businesses not only gain dedicated interns but also help create meaningful opportunities that strengthen our workforce and our communities."
Businesses interested in becoming an internship site are encouraged to contact Career Success Coordinator Jamie Carr at 918-444-4616 or carr27@nsuok.edu to learn more about partnering with the RiverHawks Scholar Program.
