Northeastern State University sees over 200 student volunteers at Big Event
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Earlier this month, Northeastern State University (NSU) organized its longstanding tradition, the Big Event with over 200 student participants who worked on more than 35 projects throughout Tahlequah.
The Big Event is an annual, single-day project where students get the opportunity to give back to the community through service work. This year, participants gave back to the community by planting gardens, raking, painting, picking up trash, organizing storage spaces and more.
NSU President Rodney Hanley said the event reflects the strong connection between the university and the community it serves.
“The Big Event is a testament to the heart of our student body and the deep bond we share with the Tahlequah community,” Hanley said. “Seeing more than 200 students roll up their sleeves to serve their neighbors demonstrates that the spirit of selfless service is alive and well at Northeastern State University. We don’t just exist within this community; we are an active, dedicated part of it.”
In addition to participating in service projects, students may also serve on The Big Event Board and subcommittees, gaining leadership experience in planning and coordination.
Lauren Million, coordinator of Student Engagement, said the impact of the day extends well beyond the service projects themselves.
“The Big Event is an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself,” Million said. “It allows students to give back, connect with others they might not otherwise meet, and help make Tahlequah a better place.”
