Northeastern State University student earns exclusive national river stewardship credential

Ava Money one of 22 students nationwide to receive River Studies and Leadership Certificate

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) student Ava Money has earned the River Studies and Leadership Certificate (RSLC) from the River Management Society (RMS), becoming one of just 22 students nationwide to receive the credential.

The RSLC recognizes undergraduate and graduate students who complete specialized coursework and hands-on experiences in river science and management. The credential equips students with practical knowledge in river-based education, conservation, policy and recreation.

Money is the eighth NSU student to earn the certification, reflecting the university's longstanding commitment to preparing graduates for careers in environmental stewardship and natural resource management.

Dr. Elizabeth Waring, associate professor of biology at NSU, said the program helps students explore career opportunities while building valuable professional connections.

"One of the things I love most about the RSLC program is that it helps students discover opportunities in river science and river management while connecting them with professionals who are passionate about protecting our freshwater resources," Waring said.

Through NSU's partnership with the RMS, students gain experiences that prepare them for careers in hydrology, environmental consulting, recreation management, invasive species prevention and other natural resource fields.

NSU President Rodney Hanley said Money's achievement reflects the value of experiential learning and the opportunities available to NSU students.

"This recognition is a testament to Ava's hard work and the opportunities she has embraced during her time at NSU," Hanley said. "Experiences like these prepare our students to make meaningful contributions in their professions and in the communities they serve."
