Northeastern State University to host renowned studio trumpeter Wayne Bergeron in concert Nov. 2
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Northeastern State University’s (NSU) Department of Music will welcome renowned studio trumpeter Wayne Bergeron for a concert Nov. 2, 2026, at 7 p.m. at the NSU Center for the Performing Arts. Hosted by the NSU Jazz Program in partnership with the Oklahoma Jazz Educators (OKJE), Saied Music and Yamaha Instruments, the concert is open to the public.
The performance will conclude the annual OKJE Fall Clinic, held on campus earlier that day. The NSU Jazz Orchestra will perform alongside Bergeron, giving student musicians the opportunity to share the stage with one of the music industry’s leading trumpet players.
Dr. Benjamin Hay, associate professor of Music at NSU, said the opportunity is especially meaningful for students who have studied Bergeron’s work.
“I can’t overstate how much this opportunity means to our students,” Hay said. “Wayne Bergeron is perhaps the greatest lead trumpet player of our era, and getting to interact with him in person will be a huge moment for our students. NSU’s jazz program has a long history of bringing legendary musicians to Tahlequah, and this is certainly one for the history books.”
For students, the chance to hear Bergeron perform live offers an experience that recordings alone cannot replicate.
“There is something intangible about hearing someone like Wayne Bergeron in person,” Hay said. “My trumpet students have listened to Bergeron’s recordings on repeat for years, but hearing his sound and delivery in person cannot be duplicated on a recording.”
NSU President Rodney Hanley said opportunities like this connect students with accomplished professionals and the experiences that help them grow as musicians.
“Bringing artists of Wayne Bergeron’s caliber to NSU gives our students the chance to learn from and perform alongside musicians they have long admired,” Hanley said. “Experiences like this help students develop their craft while seeing firsthand what is possible in their field.”
General admission tickets are $15, and the public is invited to attend. Tickets are available at nsumusic.ludus.com.
