NSU-Broken Arrow opens new Community Counseling Clinic

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. – Northeastern State University (NSU) has opened the Community Counseling Clinic (CCC) at the Broken Arrow campus, a new clinic designed to expand access to mental health services for the surrounding communities.

The clinic provides counseling services for psychological and behavioral concerns such as depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship issues, substance use disorders and more.

The clinic was developed in response to growing community needs and recent reductions in state-funded mental health resources, particularly in the Tulsa metro area.

Dr. Cheri Mays, director of the Community Counseling Clinic, said the mission is to improve access and affordability to mental health services for underserved populations.

“We aim to improve overall community well-being by addressing gaps in access to mental health care,” Mays said. “Mental health services remain inaccessible due to high costs, limited insurance coverage, long waitlists, transportation barriers, stigma and cultural barriers, and limited availability. Our clinic addresses these barriers through strategic location, flexible scheduling and culturally competent care models.”

The CCC combats these barriers by offering therapy on a sliding-scale fee, increasing access to affordable mental health care and alleviating pressure on existing providers.

NSU President Rodney Hanley said the clinic reflects the university's commitment to expanding access to quality services across the communities its campuses serve while providing hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for careers upon graduation.

"This counseling center expands access to quality mental health care while giving our students valuable real-world experience. It's an investment in healthier communities today and a stronger behavioral health workforce for the future."

The clinic is now accepting clients ages 13 and up, including teens, young adults and adults. Individual and group counseling sessions are available. Services are provided by counselors-in-training from NSU’s CACREP-accredited counseling program under the supervision of licensed professionals.

The clinic is open Mondays and Wednesdays, noon-4 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4-8 p.m.
